They are part of the Ziz River. This river flows through the Atlas Mountains. Over a long time, the water cut through the rocks. This made the deep gorges.

Two gates mark the ends of the gorge. The southern end has a lake. It also has the Hassan Addakil dam. Nearby, there is a tunnel. French troops built it in the 1930s. This tunnel helps people pass through the gorge.

People have used this path for a long time. For many years, traders used it to move goods. This was a route for caravans. In the 1st century, a Roman general led troops here. His name was Gaius Suetonius Paulinus.

The area is also good for finding old bones. People dig up fossils in the gorges. They then sell these fossils. The map shows where the gorges sit.
