Two rivers made these canyons. The Todra River and the Dadès River carved them. They cut through the mountains as they flow. The canyon walls are made of limestone. Some walls are very high. In some spots, the canyon is very narrow. It can be as narrow as a flat stony track. The walls there are sheer and smooth.

The canyon floor changes with the weather. During the dry season, the floor is mostly dry. A small stream may flow there. Travelers can walk across the floor easily. The rainy season changes everything. The Todra River can expand in a big way. It covers the floor with a strong torrent. A torrent is a fast and heavy flow of water. This happens when the river grows large during rain.
