Arak gorges

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Arak gorges are in Algeria. They are in the Tamanrasset Province. This place is about 330 kilometres from the city. These canyons were made by old rivers. The rivers carved the deep walls. Now, the bottom is a dry wadi. A wadi is a dry river bed. The air is very dry there. It gets only 60 to 75 mm of rain each year. Still, life finds a way to live. Hardy plants grow in the sand. Some animals live in the rocks too. You might see red-headed rock agama lizards. You might see wheatear birds. Small vultures fly above the cliffs. No people live in the gorges now. However, people were there a long time ago. They left behind stone tools. They also left burial mounds. These are small piles of stones. They show that humans visited this place.
