Abiod Valley

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Abiod Valley is in northeastern Algeria. It sits in the Aurès massif mountains. This valley forms a mountain pass. It is a very important place.

Rain and melting snow flow into the valley. This water makes the Abiod River. The river starts at the foot of Djebel Chélia. That is the highest mountain in Algeria. The river flows southwest toward the town of Tolga. It ends in the Sahara desert.

The north side has thick forests. You can see oak, pine, and cedar trees. These trees grow because of the rain. The south side is mostly desert. It is very dry. You might see small plants like thyme there.

Many people live on the valley walls. One village is named Ghoufi. The walls are made of soft sandstone. People use this stone to build houses. These buildings have a lot of stonework. You can also find small green spots called oases. Near Tighanimine, there is an old Roman canal for water.
