Mountains can be hard to cross. A pass makes travel easier. It is a gap or a notch between high points.

Water or wind can make a pass over a long time. These gaps help people and animals move. People use them for trade and travel.

Many roads and railways go through passes. Some high passes are very hard to use. In winter, snow can drift and block the way. People sometimes build tunnels under mountains to help traffic move.

A pass can also be a border between two countries. For example, the Andes mountains have 42 passes on the border of Argentina and Chile.

On a map, you can find a pass by looking at contour lines. These lines form an hourglass shape. This shape shows a low spot between two high peaks.

Different places have different names for them. In Japan, people call them tōge. In the Himalayas, they use the word "La."
