It is the main city of the Batna Province. This city is also a key center for the Chaoui people. It is known as the capital of the Aurès region.

The city sits high up in the Aurès Mountains. These mountains are part of the larger Atlas Mountains. Because of its location, the city provides a natural break through the mountain range. This makes it a very important place in the region.

The weather in Batna can change quite a bit. It has a cold semi-arid climate. This means the air is often dry.

During the summer, the weather is moderately hot. This is dry compared to the nearby Sahara. In the winter, the air becomes chilly and wetter. It is even possible to see snow fall on the city. This makes the mountain setting feel very distinct from the desert below.

History has shaped Batna for a very long time. Long ago, the Romans built important cities nearby. You can still see the ruins of Timgad and Lambese today. These sites show how much the Romans valued control over this area.

Later, a French garrison built a military camp there in 1844. They wanted to guard the main road to the Sahara. Since then, the city has grown from a small camp into a large center.

Batna played a huge role in the Algerian revolution. It was the first military region for the country. Mustapha Benboulaïd led the fight from this area.

There are many things to do in and around Batna. You can visit the Belezma National Park or the ruins of Timgad.
