It sits in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region and the Côte-d'Or department. The city lies on a flat plain. Two small rivers flow near it. One is the Suzon, which flows mostly underground. The other is the Ouche river. Dijon is located southeast of Paris and northwest of Geneva. It is also north of Lyon. The city has a population of 161,830 people as of 2023.

This city has a very long and interesting history. People lived in this area during the Neolithic period. Later, the Romans built a settlement there called Divio. The name might mean a sacred fountain. From the early 11th century until the late 15th century, the Dukes of Burgundy lived here. This made Dijon a place of great wealth and power. It became a famous center for art, learning, and science. The city helped change Europe during the medieval times.

You can see many different building styles when you walk through the streets. Some buildings look Gothic, while others look like they are from the Renaissance. Many townhouses in the center are from the 1700s or even earlier. A special feature is the toits bourguignons. These are colorful roofs made of glazed tiles. The tiles are arranged in pretty geometric patterns.

Dijon is very famous for its delicious food. Many people know it for its special mustard. In 1856, a man named Jean Naigeon changed the recipe. He used verjuice instead of vinegar. Verjuice is a tart juice from unripe grapes. The city also makes gingerbread and chocolate.
