It sat on the eastern border of the country. It was right next to Italy and Switzerland. Since the start of 2016, it has been part of a larger area called Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The name comes from the Rhône river and the Alps mountains. This place was very important for travel in Europe. It links northern France to the sunny Mediterranean sea.

People have lived here since very long ago. The first recorded settlers were the Gauls, who were also called Celts. They built cities like Lyon and traded with other lands. Later, Julius Caesar led an invasion of Celtic Gaul. This made most of the area part of the Roman Empire. Lyon became a very major city during Roman times. Later, the area was part of several different kingdoms. It eventually became a royal part of France.

Rhône-Alpes is a very busy and wealthy place. It has the sixth-largest economy of any region in Europe. The region has many big cities like Lyon, Grenoble, and Saint-Étienne.
