It flows through two different countries, Switzerland and France. The river starts high up in the Alps.

It begins as melting water from the Rhône Glacier in the Swiss canton of Valais. From there, the water travels southwest through mountain valleys. Eventually, it flows into Lake Geneva. After leaving the lake, the river moves through France toward the south. It finally empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

Near the end, the river splits into two parts called the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône. These two paths create a special area called the Camargue delta.

The river's journey is full of many different waters. In the Swiss Alps, it collects water from the Massa and the Vispa rivers. As it moves through the mountains, it also takes in water from the Pennine Alps. The river becomes much larger after it passes through Lake Geneva.

Once it enters France, it meets many other rivers. Its biggest helper is the Saône river, which joins it at the city of Lyon.

Other rivers like the Isère and the Durance also flow into it. Because it collects so much water, the Rhône is one of the three largest rivers that flow into the Mediterranean Sea. This makes it a very powerful force of nature.

People have used the Rhône for a very long time. The Greeks and Romans used the river as a main path for trade.

It helped move goods and ideas between the sea and the lands to the north. Traveling on the river used to be a very hard job. In the past, people used boats called water coaches pulled by horses or men. A trip down the river by barge could take three whole weeks! Later, people used steam boats to make the trip faster. Today, motor boats can finish the same trip in only three days.

The river is also used to create energy and help farmers. The Rhône is famous for having a very strong current. The water can move quite fast in some narrow spots. To manage this, people built many dams and locks.

These structures help make electricity for many homes. In fact, the river helps provide about 16% of France's total hydroelectric power. The water also helps with farming in the valley. The river valley is a very important place for growing things like wine. In the Valais region, the weather is sunny and dry, which is perfect for vineyards.

You can see how the river connects many different places. It flows past famous cities like Lyon, Avignon, and Arles.

It also acts as a border between different areas. For example, it marks the line between the Swiss cantons of Valais and Vaud. It also forms part of the border between France and Switzerland. Whether it is through its deep valleys or its wide delta, the Rhône is a huge part of the landscape. It links the high, snowy mountains to the warm, salty sea.
