It is the second-longest river in Central and Western Europe. Only the Danube river is longer. The river begins high up in the Swiss Alps. Specifically, it starts in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.

One part of the river starts at Lake Toma. This area is a huge catchment for water. The river drains a massive area of 185,000 square kilometers. It is a vital part of the European landscape.

The river follows a long and winding path.

First, the Anterior and Posterior Rhine join together. This meeting creates the Alpine Rhine. This section flows through a wide glacial valley. The river then flows into Lake Constance.

From the lake, it flows through several different sections. It passes through the High Rhine and the Upper Rhine. Then it moves through the Middle Rhine. Finally, it becomes the Lower Rhine. It turns west to enter the Netherlands.

There, it empties into the North Sea.

History has always been tied to this water. The Rhine and the Danube were once boundaries for the Roman Empire.

For a long time, it has been a busy path for trade. People use it to move goods deep into the land. In the Holy Roman Empire, many people built castles along the banks. These defenses show how important the waterway was. Even today, it remains a key path for ships.

The Rhine is full of interesting facts and numbers.

Its length is often measured in "Rhine-kilometers." This scale starts at a bridge in Konstanz. The river reaches 1,036.20 kilometers at the Hook of Holland. It also holds the most powerful waterfall in Europe. This is called the Rhine Falls.

Many famous cities sit along its banks. These include Basel, Strasbourg, Cologne, and Düsseldorf.

Even some German states and French departments use its name.

Today, the river faces a new kind of challenge.

Experts study the river's water levels very closely. They are worried about the climate crisis. They believe the river could see a huge drop in water.

In a very bad drought, it could even dry up. This might happen within the next 30 to 80 years. Protecting the river is an important job for the future.
