It sits near the north side of the Alps. The lake is shared by two countries, Switzerland and France. About sixty percent of the water belongs to Switzerland. The other forty percent is in France. The lake is shaped like a crescent moon. Its long sides look like two horns pointing south. It is the largest lake on the path of the Rhône river.

The lake is made of three different parts. These parts formed in different ways over a long time. One part came from the earth moving and folding. Another part was carved out by old glaciers. The third part was made by bits of earth settling. The middle part is the largest and deepest basin. It is very wide in this section. The deepest spot is 310 metres below the surface. This is quite far down from the top of the water.

People have known about this lake for a very long time. The name was used back when Julius Caesar lived. The name might come from an old Greek word. In the past, the lake was also called Lac Leman. This is still the name used in French today. Many famous people have visited or lived near the water. The writer Mary Shelley stayed here to write ghost stories. One of those stories became the famous book, Frankenstein. Even the singer Freddie Mercury had a home in Montreux.

The lake has many interesting facts and numbers. The Rhône river flows into the lake from the east. It starts at the Rhône Glacier near the Grimsel Pass. The river flows through the canton of Valais. It enters the lake between Villeneuve and Le Bouveret. Then, the river flows slowly out at the city of Geneva. The highest point near the lake is Monte Rosa. It stands 4,634 metres above sea level. The water is very important for the land around it.

Many people use the lake for fun and sports. You can see people sailing or wind surfing on the waves. Some people like to go rowing in small boats. There is a famous rowing race that goes all around the lake. It is the longest non-stop rowing race in the world. Swimmers also do a long race called The Signature. It goes from Chillon Castle to Geneva.
