It sits in Western Europe. The lake is shared by Switzerland and France. Sixty percent of the water is in Switzerland. The rest is in France.

The lake is shaped like a crescent moon. High mountains sit all around it. You can see the snowy peaks of Mont Blanc from some spots. The Rhône river flows into the lake. Then, the river flows out at the city of Geneva.

Many people visit the lake to have fun. They like to go sailing or rowing. Some people even swim across long distances. There is a famous rowing race that goes all the way around the lake.

In the past, the water was not clean. It was hard to swim there. Now, the water is safe again. But a new tiny animal called the quagga mussel has arrived. These mussels cover the bottom of the lake. They have changed how the lake works. Scientists study these changes to help the lake stay healthy.
