This history has had a great influence on the region. These groups help make Geneva a very important place for the world.

Geneva has a very long and busy history. A Celtic tribe called the Allobroges lived there until 121 BC. Then, the Romans took control of the area.

Later, the Burgundians chose Geneva as a capital for twenty years. This was because the city had an important port for trade. In the 1400s, the city grew quite large. It had about 11,000 people by the middle of that century. This was much larger than nearby cities like Lausanne.

Trade has always been a big part of life here. In the 1400s, Geneva held seven large trade fairs every year.

Some of these fairs were very important for all of Europe. The city sat at a meeting point for many roads. These paths connected Italy to Northern Europe through the Alps. Even today, the area is well-connected by many paths. You can see this in the many railway and tram lines.
