While most cantons are simply parts of the country, Geneva holds the official title of a republic. It is the westernmost canton in Switzerland and is primarily French-speaking. Geographically, it sits at the western edge of Lake Geneva. The Rhone river, the canton's main river, flows through the region on both sides. Most of its borders are shared with France, specifically the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its only neighbor within Switzerland is the canton of Vaud.

Geneva is a highly populated and cosmopolitan region. This means it is a place where many different cultures meet. The canton is composed of forty-five distinct municipalities. The city of Geneva serves as the seat for both the government and the parliament. Because of its location and history, it has become a global hub. Many major international organizations are based here. These include the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The scientific organization CERN also operates within the canton.

The history of the region began with the Allobroges. They were a rich and powerful Celtic tribe that controlled the area. In 121 BC, the Romans defeated this tribe. The city then became part of the Gallia Narbonensis province. Even under Roman rule, Geneva developed a strong economy. This was due to its port on Lake Geneva. The port allowed for trade between various routes and Roman colonies.

In 443, the Burgundians settled in a region called Sapaudia. They chose Geneva as their capital for the first 20 years. They did this because of the city's economic importance and the prestige of its Bishop.

As the Burgundian kingdom expanded, Geneva's central role changed. The kingdom was eventually divided between two brothers, Godegisel and Gundobad. Godegisel settled in Geneva and controlled the northern bishoprics. In the year 500, a war broke out between the brothers. Godegisel was defeated, and Geneva was pillaged and destroyed. Later, in 532, the Franks conquered the Burgundians. They divided the land into three administrative parts. Geneva was included in a region called the Pagus Ultraioranus. Because it was now on the edge of this new region, it lost its status as a capital.

Between the 11th and 15th centuries, the Counts of Geneva emerged. This period was marked by intense power struggles. There was constant conflict between the local counts and the Bishops of Geneva. One major turning point occurred around 1219. At this time, the Counts of Geneva moved their capital to Annecy. This created a complete separation between the ruling of the city and its surrounding lands. The Bishops became the primary rulers of the city itself. By 1401, the County of Geneva was sold to Amadeus VIII of Savoy for 45,000 gold francs.

Economic growth reached a peak in the 15th century. During this time, Geneva hosted seven yearly trade fairs. Four of these fairs had significant international importance. These included the Epiphany, Easter, August, and October/November fairs. Several factors helped this expansion. The Hundred Years' War shifted trade routes toward the Rhone valley. Additionally, the House of Savoy provided a long period of peace known as the pax sabauda. This stability allowed the population to grow significantly. By the middle of the 15th century, the city had about 11,000 inhabitants. This made it much larger than nearby cities like Lausanne, which had 5,000 people.
