The city is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. It is also the most populous city in the French-speaking region known as Romandy. Geneva serves as a vital international financial center and a hub for global diplomacy. Because of this, many people call it the "Peace Capital."

Geneva is unique because it hosts the highest number of international organizations in the world. It contains many headquarters for United Nations agencies. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) are also based here.

The city has a history of creating rules for humanitarian treatment during wartime. This happened through the signing of the Geneva Conventions. In the years following World War I, the city also hosted the League of Nations. Geneva shares a special status with cities like New York and Basel. These cities host critical international groups without being the capital of a country.

The geography of the area is defined by water and mountains. The city is positioned at 46°12' North and 6°09' East. It is surrounded by three mountain chains belonging to the Jura range. These include the Jura main range, the Vuache, and the Salève.

You can also see the Mont Blanc mountain range from the city. The Rhône is the main river, but the Arve also flows into it just west of the center. The city's altitude is tied to the Pierres du Niton. These are two large rocks in the lake from the last ice age. General Guillaume Henri Dufour used this point to survey Switzerland.

The climate in Geneva is classified as oceanic or temperate.

Winters are usually cool and often feature light frosts at night. Summers are relatively warm. Precipitation is spread fairly evenly throughout the year. However, autumn is often the wettest season. A north-easterly wind called the Bise can cause severe icing in the winter. In the summer, the warm weather draws people to public beaches like Genève Plage. The nearby mountains receive heavy snowfall, making them great for skiing. Famous resorts like Verbier are less than three hours away by car.

Geneva has a very long and complex history. It began as an Allobrogian border town. The Roman Republic took control of the area in 121 BC.

During the Middle Ages, a count ruled the city under the Holy Roman Empire. By the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation changed the city forever. John Calvin became a spiritual leader and established a "Protestant Rome." The city later faced influence from Catholic France. After the Napoleonic Wars, Geneva joined the Swiss Confederation on May 19, 1815. In 1907, the city adopted the separation of Church and State.

The population of Geneva is split between the city and the larger metropolitan area. The city itself had 203,856 people in January 2021.

The broader Geneva metropolitan area is much larger. This area includes suburbs in Switzerland and parts of France. The Eurostat-defined Functional Urban Area had 1,053,436 people in 2021. This area includes 93 Swiss communes and 158 French communes. A cooperation group called "Grand Genève" helps organize this cross-border region. This group includes the Canton of Geneva and the District of Nyon. It also includes the Genevois français area.

Geneva is highly ranked in several global categories. In 2025, it was the fifteenth most important financial center in the world. It ranked fourth in Europe, behind London, Frankfurt, and Dublin. In 2024, Mercer ranked it as the third most liveable city globally. However, it was also ranked as the fourth most expensive city. A 2018 UBS ranking placed Geneva first for gross earnings. It also ranked fourth in purchasing power. These numbers show how much influence the city holds in the global economy.
