This region is the most populous canton in the Swiss nation. It serves as a massive global financial center. The canton also holds a very high Human Development Index score of 0.993. This score is the highest among 1,790 subnational regions as of 2022. The official language used is German. However, many people speak a local Swiss German dialect called Züritüütsch.

The geography of the canton is shaped by glacial landforms. Most of the land sits on the eastern Swiss plateau. The territory is largely situated south of the Rhine river.

The region is part of the High Rhine drainage basin. Many rivers flow through the land from the southeast toward the northwest. These rivers include the Reuss, the Sihl, the Glatt, and the Töss. The Linth-Limmat river is very important because it forms Lake Zurich.

This lake is the largest in the canton. Other significant lakes include the Greifensee and the Pfäffikersee.

Prehistoric history is deeply tied to the water in this region. Ancient people built settlements called pile dwellings around Lake Zurich. These dwellings were constructed on wooden piles.

Many of these sites are now underwater because the lake has grown. There are 56 prehistoric pile dwelling sites in Switzerland. Nine of these specific sites are located on the shores of Lake Zurich. These sites are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. They are also listed in the Swiss inventory of cultural property. This shows their importance to national and regional history.

The political history of the area is quite complex. In the early days, the region was known as Zürichgau. It was a subdivision of the Duchy of Alamannia. Different groups held power over the territory at different times. The Habsburgs and the Kybugers ruled different sides of Lake Zurich in the 13th century. The city of Zurich became "reichsfrei" in 1218. This meant it had more independence. Zurich eventually joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1351.

The territory grew through various purchases and expansions over many centuries.

In the 19th century, the canton underwent significant political changes. A radical-liberal constitution was adopted in 1831. This period saw the rise of Alfred Escher. He was a very powerful leader in the cantonal government. Some people called him "Tsar of All Zurich" because of his influence.

His leadership helped Zurich grow into a major economic center. Later, the Democratic Movement pushed for more direct democracy. This led to a new constitution in 1869. This new system allowed for the popular election of government officials. It also introduced progressive taxes and guaranteed freedom of religion.

Modern development has transformed the landscape and economy. The canton has seen rapid urbanization in recent decades. Transportation has become much more efficient for the people living there. The S-Bahn is a modern railway system that helps people commute.

This system connects the city to many surrounding municipalities. Aviation has also played a role in the canton's growth. The first airport was built at Dübendorf in 1910. This was later replaced by the international airport at Kloten in 1948. The city of Winterthur remains a major urban center within the canton.

Today, the canton is divided into several distinct areas. These include the capital city of Zurich and the lakeside regions. Other areas are the Unterland, the Oberland, and the Weinland. The geography varies from the high peaks to the river valleys. The Schnebelhorn is the highest summit in the canton at 1,105 meters. This mountain sits between the cantons of Zurich and St. Gallen. The canton remains a vital part of the Swiss economic and social system.
