The canton is named after its central town, Schwyz. This region holds immense historical importance for the entire nation. In fact, the name Switzerland is derived from the name of this canton. Furthermore, the Swiss national flag is based on the coat of arms of Schwyz.

Human activity in the region began during the Upper Paleolithic period.

The earliest traces of humans date back to approximately 12,500 BC. Excavations in the karst caves of the Muotatal valley revealed many ancient sites. Stone Age hunter-gatherers used alpine meadows at Bödmeren, Twärenen, and Silberen for camps. Archaeologists found ibex and red deer bones at these locations. These remains show that animals were butchered and cooked there. In 2009, researchers discovered a stone drill, which is the first Stone Age tool found in the canton.

During the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, settlements grew around the local lakes.

The settlements at Hurden in Freienbach are part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps. This area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These sites are linked to the western Cortaillod culture and the eastern Pfyn and Corded Ware cultures. During the Bronze Age, people built several bridges between the promontory of Endingen and Hurden. Archaeologists have discovered over 200,000 posts and seven different bridges from this era. Ten distinct settlements dating from 4300 to 2700 BC were found on the Schwyz side of the lake.

The Roman era brought new structures to the region. A Roman Vicus, which is a small settlement, was established at Kempraten in Rapperswil. This was located near a massive bridge called the Seedamm. Around AD 200, a Gallo-Roman temple was built on Ufenau island. This site was later redeveloped into the present chapel of Sts. Peter and Paul. Roman coin hoards were also found at Küssnacht and Rickenbach bei Schwyz. These findings suggest that Küssnacht may have been the site of a Roman estate.

During the Middle Ages, power was shared between religious and secular leaders.

The Abbey of Einsiedeln and the town of Schwyz were two major powers. The Abbey was consecrated in 948 on the site where Saint Meinrad was murdered in 861. In the valleys, many farmers used common land for grazing. They organized into regional collectives to manage this land. These collectives helped create a strong sense of independence. Meanwhile, outside landlords like the Habsburgs built castles to control their holdings.

A turning point occurred in 1291 with the formation of a defensive alliance.

On August 1, 1291, the cantons of Schwyz, Uri, and Unterwalden entered an Eternal Alliance. This group eventually became the Swiss Confederation. This alliance was likely prompted by the death of Rudolf I of Habsburg. In 1315, the Confederates faced a major test at the Battle of Morgarten.

An Austrian army led by Leopold of Austria attempted a surprise attack. The Confederates used an ambush between Lake Aegeri and the Morgarten Pass. They attacked from above using rocks, logs, and halberds. This victory helped the confederacy grow as more cities joined the pact.

Schwyz played a leading role in the expansion of the Old Swiss Confederacy.

Because of its active role, the name of the canton was applied to the whole confederation. By 1320, people already used the name for the entire group. Over the next several decades, cities like Lucerne, Zürich, and Bern joined the alliance. This growth transformed a small defensive pact into a major political entity. Today, the history of Schwyz remains visible in its landscapes and its central role in Swiss identity.
