Humans have lived in this area for a very long time. The earliest traces of people date back to about 12,500 BC.
During the Middle Ages, the land was shaped by powerful groups. The Abbey of Einsiedeln was a major center of power.
History changed forever in the year 1291.

Today, Schwyz is a key part of the Swiss story. As the confederation grew, more cities joined the pact. These included Lucerne, Zürich, Glarus, Zug, and Bern.

The canton of Schwyz is a major administrative region in central Switzerland.

Human activity in the region began during the Upper Paleolithic period.
During the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, settlements grew around the local lakes. The settlements at Hurden in Freienbach are part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps. This area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These sites are linked to the western Cortaillod culture and the eastern Pfyn and Corded Ware cultures. During the Bronze Age, people built several bridges between the promontory of Endingen and Hurden. Archaeologists have discovered over 200,000 posts and seven different bridges from this era. Ten distinct settlements dating from 4300 to 2700 BC were found on the Schwyz side of the lake.
The Roman era brought new structures to the region. A Roman Vicus, which is a small settlement, was established at Kempraten in Rapperswil. This was located near a massive bridge called the Seedamm. Around AD 200, a Gallo-Roman temple was built on Ufenau island. This site was later redeveloped into the present chapel of Sts. Peter and Paul. Roman coin hoards were also found at Küssnacht and Rickenbach bei Schwyz. These findings suggest that Küssnacht may have been the site of a Roman estate.
During the Middle Ages, power was shared between religious and secular leaders.
A turning point occurred in 1291 with the formation of a defensive alliance.

Schwyz played a leading role in the expansion of the Old Swiss Confederacy.
