This area was ruled by the House of Savoy. It was not one single, unified state. Instead, it was a mix of many different places. These included the Duchy of Aosta and the County of Nice. Historians call this a composite monarchy. This means many different lands were joined by having the same ruler. The people living there spoke languages like Arpitan and Piedmontese. It was a very important part of the Savoyard state.

How the duchy grew was a long process. In 1416, the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund gave a new title to Amadeus VIII. This turned the County of Savoy into a duchy. Amadeus VIII was a very important leader. He helped the economy grow through many reforms. He also won wars to gain more land. He defeated the Duchy of Montferrat and the Marquisate of Saluzzo. He was also a man who loved art and literature. He even worked with the famous artist Giacomo Jaquerio.

History shows that Savoy faced many hard times. In the 1500s, the land was often in trouble. France wanted to take control of the duchy. In 1536, French troops invaded the land. They took the city of Turin on April 3. A leader named Emmanuel Philibert helped the state recover. He signed the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559. This treaty gave the duchy its freedom back. After this, he moved the capital to Turin in 1562. He also built a real army of trained soldiers.

There were many famous people in the House of Savoy. Charles Emmanuel I was a poet and a reformer. He was known as "Charles the Great." His son, Charles Emmanuel II, was also a very cultured man. He built the grand Palace of Venaria. This palace was built in the Baroque style. He also helped the city of Turin grow much larger. In 1661, he started the first public school system. These leaders helped the state become much more organized and strong.

During the 1600s, a terrible plague also hit the people. There were many wars that made life very hard. Even with these struggles, the leaders made big changes. They built cities, schools, and strong defenses. This helped the small duchy survive for many years in a changing world.
