The Old Swiss Confederacy was a group of independent small states. It was the start of what we now call Switzerland.

These states were part of the Holy Roman Empire at first. They were not one single country like today. Instead, they were a loose union of different places. Some were small mountain valleys and some were large cities.

This group helped people manage common interests like trade. It also helped keep peace along mountain trade routes. This made the land a very important place in Europe.

The union began with just three mountain communities. These were Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden.

They wanted to protect themselves from the powerful Habsburg family. The Habsburgs were a strong group that ruled much of the land. They even tried to force taxes on the people. To stay safe, the three groups made a pact. They promised to help each other and resolve fights peacefully.

This was a very important step for their future.

Over many years, the group grew much larger.

First, they added cities like Lucerne, Zurich, and Bern. This created a mix of rural areas and urban cities. By the middle of the 14th century, they were a group of eight cantons. They became very good at defending their land. They used a special military tactic called the pike square.

This helped them win many battles against big armies. By the year 1513, the number of cantons grew to thirteen.

Sometimes, the different groups had big disagreements. A major change called the Reformation divided them.

Some cantons became Protestant and others stayed Catholic. This caused internal conflict for many years. The different sides often fought in battles like the Wars of Kappel. These fights made it hard for the leaders to work together. Even so, the groups stayed together as a confederacy. They even pledged to stay neutral in 1647 during a large war.

The Old Swiss Confederacy lasted for a very long time. It stayed mostly the same until the year 1798.

That year, an invasion from France changed everything. The French invasion led to a new group called the Helvetic Republic. Later, the old way of being a confederacy was restored. We call it the "Old" Swiss Confederacy to show it was different from modern Switzerland. It shows how small groups can join to build something strong. This history shaped the country we know today.
