The Peace of Westphalia was a group of two peace treaties. They were signed in October 1648. These treaties ended the Thirty Years' War. This war was a very long and hard time for Europe. It lasted from 1618 until 1648. Many people lost their lives during this period. Experts say that about eight million people died.

The peace helped bring order back to the Holy Roman Empire. This was a large area in central Europe. It was a very important moment in history.

To make peace, leaders had to meet and talk. They chose two cities in the Westphalia region. These cities were Münster and Osnabrück. Both cities were kept neutral for the talks. This meant no fighting was allowed there. The talks were very long and quite hard. Different groups wanted to meet on their own land. Because of this, the work was split between the two cities.

Many different leaders came to help decide the rules.

Many people worked to reach this agreement. There were 109 delegations sent to the meetings. These groups represented many different states and interests. Some groups were very large and powerful. Others were smaller groups of people. In Münster, the Holy Roman Empire met with France. In Osnabrück, the Holy Roman Empire met with Sweden.

Leaders like Count Maximilian von Trautmansdorff led the Imperial group. Other leaders like Count Johan Oxenstierna led the Swedish group. They all had to find a way to agree.

These treaties changed how religion worked in Europe. Before the peace, a ruler could pick the religion for everyone. After the peace, this changed for many people. Rulers could still choose between three main religions. They could choose Catholicism, Lutheranism, or Calvinism. However, they could no longer force their subjects to follow them.

This meant people could practice their own faith privately. The peace also recognized the independence of the Dutch Republic. This gave many people a safer place to live.

Today, we still look at these treaties to understand the world. Some scholars say this was the start of modern international relations. They call these new ideas Westphalian sovereignty. This idea helps countries understand how to live near each other. It focuses on how different lands and leaders rule their own areas.

Even though some historians debate the details, the impact was huge. The treaties changed how laws were made in the Empire. They also changed how judges were chosen for courts. The world became a different place because of these papers.
