It lasted from 1618 until 1648. Most of the fighting happened in Central Europe. This war changed the way countries worked together. It was one of the most destructive times in history. Many people lost their homes and lives during these years. The war shaped the map of Europe for a long time.

Religious disagreements were a major cause of the fighting.

For a long time, people in the Holy Roman Empire disagreed about faith. Some were Catholic and others were Protestant. A rule called the Peace of Augsburg tried to help. It said that a ruler could choose the religion for his land. However, new groups like the Calvinists made things difficult. This created tension between different leaders and their people.

In 1618, a specific event started the war in Bohemia.

The Catholic Ferdinand II became the king of Bohemia. Many Protestant nobles there did not like this choice. They feared he would take away their religious rights. In May 1618, they threw two Catholic officials out of a castle window. This event was called the Third Defenestration of Prague. It turned a local argument into a much larger fight.

As time went on, the war grew very large.

Other countries joined because they wanted more power or land. Leaders like Christian IV of Denmark and Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden entered the fight. Even France joined to fight against the Habsburg family. This turned a civil war into a struggle between many nations. The fighting caused great suffering for soldiers and civilians alike. Some parts of Germany saw their populations drop by over 50%.

Finally, the fighting ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

This peace agreement changed many rules for European states. It gave more independence to places like Bavaria and Saxony. Sweden also gained new lands in northern Germany. Spain finally recognized that the Dutch Republic was an independent nation. This new way of ruling helped bring a new balance to Europe.
