The Thirty Years' War was a big conflict in Europe.
The war started because of religion. People had different ways of praying. Some were Catholic and some were Protestant. A leader named Ferdinand II was a Catholic. Many people in Bohemia were Protestants. They did not want a Catholic king. In 1618, they threw two men out of a castle window.

The Thirty Years' War was a massive and destructive conflict in Central Europe. It lasted from 1618 until 1648. This war was not just one single fight. Instead, it was a series of connected wars. These included the Eighty Years' War and the Franco-Spanish War. The conflict fundamentally changed the political map of Europe. It also altered how different nations interacted with one another.
Religious tension was a primary cause of the fighting. The 16th-century Reformation had split the Holy Roman Empire. This Empire was a large collection of many different states. In 1555, the Peace of Augsburg attempted to create stability. It used a principle called *cuius regio, eius religio*. This meant a ruler could choose the religion for his land. Most states became either Catholic or Lutheran. However, the rise of Calvinism caused new problems. Calvinism was a Protestant doctrine that both Catholics and Lutherans viewed with hostility.
Political power also played a major role in the conflict. The House of Habsburg had ruled as emperors since 1440. They were the largest landowners in the Empire. The Habsburgs ruled over eight million subjects in territories like Austria and Bohemia. They also controlled the Spanish Empire for a time. This created a massive web of family connections and power. Different branches of the family ruled in Austria and Spain. While they often worked together, they had different goals. Spain was a maritime superpower with global reach. Austria was a land-based power focused on Germany and its eastern borders.
The war began with the Bohemian Revolt in 1618. This started when the Catholic Ferdinand II became the king of Bohemia. The Protestant nobility in Bohemia feared he would take their rights. They were worried because Ferdinand had already removed Protestantism in Styria. In May 1618, Protestant nobles met with Catholic officials in Prague. They threw the officials out of a castle window. This event is known as the Third Defenestration of Prague.
As the years passed, the war expanded through several phases. Initially, it was a civil war within the Holy Roman Empire. This phase lasted from 1618 until roughly 1635. During this time, leaders like Christian IV of Denmark intervened. Later, the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus joined the fight. The conflict grew even larger when France entered the war. France joined an alliance with Sweden to fight their Habsburg rivals. This transformed the struggle into a massive European power struggle. The war involved many different armies and shifting alliances.
The human cost of the war was incredibly high. It is estimated that between 4.5 and 8 million people died. These deaths came from battles, famine, and disease. In some parts of Germany, the population declined by over 50%.
The war finally ended with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.
