The kingdom had two very different stages in its history. For a long time, it belonged to the Aragonese and Spanish crowns. Later, it became a possession of the Savoyard state. This kingdom helped shape the history of the Mediterranean region. It eventually grew to become the foundation of a new nation.

To understand the kingdom, we must look at how it changed hands. In 1297, the Pope granted the islands of Corsica and Sardinia to King James II of Aragon. Starting in 1324, the Aragonese began to conquer the island of Sardinia. They eventually gained full control by 1420 after a long war. Later, the island became part of the huge Spanish Empire. In 1720, the island was given to the Duke of Savoy, Victor Amadeus II. This moved the kingdom into a new era of rule.

Under the Savoyard rulers, the kingdom changed its focus. The rulers lived on the Italian mainland instead of on the island. They kept their main power in the city of Turin. Because of this, the island of Sardinia was often less important to the monarchy. The state was officially called the "States of His Majesty the King of Sardinia." People often called it Piedmont-Sardinia or Sardinia-Piedmont. In 1847, a law called the Perfect Fusion centralized all government in Turin.

As time passed, the kingdom grew much stronger and larger. After Napoleon was defeated, the Congress of Vienna gave Savoy new lands. This included a place called Liguria. By 1853, the Savoyards had built a very strong power. They added many territories through various steps. They took Lombardy in 1859 and the Two Sicilies in 1860. They also added Venetia in 1866 and the Papal States in 1870.

These many changes led to a very big moment in history. On March 17, 1861, the kingdom changed its name completely. It became the Kingdom of Italy to match its new size. The capital moved from Turin to Florence and then to Rome. This new kingdom was the direct predecessor of the modern Italian Republic. The history of Sardinia is a key part of how Italy became a single country.
