The Kingdom of Sicily was a powerful state in the Mediterranean. It began in 1130 and lasted until 1816. This kingdom included the island of Sicily and southern Italy. For a short time, it even reached into Northern Africa.

The kingdom grew from the County of Sicily. This earlier land was formed in 1071. It was created during the Norman conquest of the southern peninsula. The island was split into three main regions. These were Val di Mazara, Val Demone, and Val di Noto.

To understand how the kingdom grew, we look at the Normans. These people were descendants of Vikings from northern France. They worked as mercenaries for other leaders. A leader named Roger I led them to conquer Sicily. He used an army of 700 knights to take the city of Messina. In 1068, his men defeated Muslim forces at Misilmeri. The most important moment was the Siege of Palermo. By 1091, the Normans had full control of the island.

Roger II officially started the kingdom on Christmas Day in 1130. He did this with the help of Pope Innocent II. Roger II united many lands that his father had won. These lands included the Maltese Archipelago. He also ruled the Duchy of Apulia. Roger II wanted to make a strong, central government. He made many new laws to help him rule. His admiral, George of Antioch, even helped him conquer parts of Africa. This made Sicily a great power at sea.

Later, a king named Frederick I brought new order to the land. He was also known as the Holy Roman Emperor. In 1231, he shared a famous set of laws. These were called the Constitutions of Melfi. These laws helped create a strong monarchy. For example, people could not carry weapons in public without permission. This helped stop many rebellions.

Frederick also built the Castel del Monte. He even helped start the University of Naples in 1224. These things made the kingdom a very organized place.

History brought many changes to the kingdom's rule. In 1282, a revolt called the Sicilian Vespers happened. This event ended the rule of Charles of Anjou on the island. After that, the kingdom split into two parts. The island and the mainland became separate. Many different families took turns ruling the land. These included the House of Barcelona and the House of Savoy. Eventually, the kingdom merged with Naples. In 1861, it finally became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy.
