The Kingdom of Sicily was a powerful Mediterranean state. It existed from 1130 until 1816. This realm included the island of Sicily and the southern Italian Peninsula. For a time, it even controlled parts of Northern Africa.

The kingdom grew out of the County of Sicily. That earlier state was formed in 1071 during the Norman conquest. The island itself was divided into three distinct regions. These were Val di Mazara, Val Demone, and Val di Noto.

The kingdom began with the rise of the Normans. These people were descendants of Vikings from northern France. They originally served as mercenaries for various leaders. Roger I led these Norman forces to conquer the island from Sicilian Muslims. He used an army of 700 knights to take Messina. After the Siege of Palermo, the Normans held full control by 1091.

On Christmas Day in 1130, Roger II founded the official kingdom. He united the lands his father had conquered. This included the Maltese Archipelago and the Duchy of Apulia. Roger II faced many challenges to his authority. In 1136, the Holy Roman Emperor Lothair III and the Byzantine Emperor John II Comnenus invaded Sicily. However, Roger's son, Roger III, captured the Pope at Galluccio in 1139. This forced the Pope to recognize Roger's kingship through the Treaty of Mignano.

Roger II also worked to centralize his government. He passed the Assizes of Ariano to organize his rule. His admiral, George of Antioch, helped expand the kingdom into Africa. This earned Roger the title "King of Africa." This expansion made Sicily a leading maritime power in the Mediterranean. The kingdom's strength relied on its ability to control the sea for nearly a century.

Following the Normans, the Hohenstaufen family took control. This period began with Frederick I, who became Holy Roman Emperor in 1220. He was a very important ruler for Sicilian law. In 1231, he issued the Constitutions of Melfi, also called the Liber Augustalis. These laws created an absolute monarchy. They were the first centralized state in Europe to emerge from feudalism. For example, citizens could not carry weapons in public without royal command. This system of written law remained the basis for Sicilian law until 1819.

Frederick I also contributed to culture and education. He built the Castel del Monte and founded the University of Naples in 1224. However, the Hohenstaufen rule faced constant conflict with the Papacy. After Frederick's death, his heirs struggled to maintain power. Eventually, the Pope arranged for Charles of Anjou to take the throne. This led to the Angevin period, which began in 1266.

The Angevin rule was short-lived due to a major revolt. In 1282, an event called the Sicilian Vespers occurred. This revolt threw the Angevin rulers off the island of Sicily. This caused the kingdom to split into two separate parts. The mainland became known informally as the Kingdom of Naples. The island became a semi-independent viceroyalty. It was ruled by the House of Barcelona after the Compromise of Caspe in 1412.

Many different dynasties later controlled the island. The Spanish Inquisition gained strength in Sicily after the crowns of Castile and Aragon joined. During the War of the Spanish Succession (1700–1714), the House of Savoy took control. In 1720, Savoy traded Sicily to Austria in exchange for Sardinia. Later, a branch of the Bourbons ruled the land. Following the Napoleonic era, the island merged with Naples. This created the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Finally, in 1861, it became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy.
