Italy was not always one single country. For many centuries, the Italian peninsula was split into many small parts. Some areas were ruled by the pope in the Papal States. Other lands were controlled by kings or foreign empires like Austria and Spain.

This split meant that people living in different cities often had different leaders. Some people felt this was wrong and wanted a unified nation. They dreamed of a country where all Italians could live together under one government. This big movement to join the pieces together is called the Risorgimento.

Many different ideas emerged about how to join Italy. Some people, like Giuseppe Mazzini, wanted a republic. A republic is a country where people choose their leaders. Other thinkers, like Vincenzo Gioberti, suggested a group of states led by the pope. A middle idea was to have a group of states led by the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Secret groups like the Carbonari also worked to fight for change. They wanted to end the rule of kings and create fair governments. These different groups all shared the goal of making Italy one nation.

Real people led the way during the 1800s. King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia became a very important leader. He was even called the Father of the Fatherland.

Camillo Benso, the Count of Cavour, was a smart politician who helped plan the new nation. General Giuseppe Garibaldi was a brave soldier who led many people in battle.

Writers also helped by sharing ideas about Italian identity. For example, Alessandro Manzoni wrote a famous book to help people use a shared language. These leaders and thinkers worked hard to turn a dream into a reality.

Major events helped the unification move forward step by step. In 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was officially proclaimed.

This joined many states to the Kingdom of Sardinia. However, the work was not quite finished yet. In 1870, leaders captured the city of Rome.

After that, Rome became the capital city of the new country. This was a huge step for the new nation. It helped make the country feel whole and strong.

The unification process continued even after the main parts joined. Some areas where Italian was spoken remained outside the borders. These lands included places like Trento and Trieste.

These places finally joined Italy in 1918 after World War I ended. This was seen as the final part of the long movement. Today, Italy celebrates this history every year on March 17. This date marks the day the Kingdom of Italy was first announced. It is a time to remember the many people who worked for unity.
