At first, the island was part of the Spanish Empire. This began when leaders from Aragon conquered the island in 1324. They ruled for a long time. In 1720, a new group took control. This was the House of Savoy.

The Savoy rulers lived on the Italian mainland. They ruled from a city called Turin. Because of this, the island was less important to them. The kingdom grew much larger under their rule. They added lands like Liguria and Piedmont.
