Long ago, the island of Sardinia had four kingdoms.

These kingdoms rose in the Middle Ages. For a long time, the Byzantine Empire ruled the island. But pirates from North Africa began to attack. The Byzantine army could not help. Because of this, the people of Sardinia had to rule themselves. This made them independent.

Each kingdom had a leader called a judge.

The four kingdoms were Cagliari, Arborea, Gallura, and Torres.

The judges did not have all the power. A group called the Corona de Logu helped them. This group was a council of elders. They even chose the ruler. The people could remove a judge if he was unfair.

Rules helped the people live together. A leader named Eleanor of Arborea helped make laws.

These laws protected farms and animals. They also protected the people. This made life more certain for everyone on the island.
