These kingdoms rose in the Middle Ages. For a long time, the Byzantine Empire ruled the island. But pirates from North Africa began to attack. The Byzantine army could not help. Because of this, the people of Sardinia had to rule themselves. This made them independent.

Between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, the island of Sardinia was divided into four independent states.

These states are often called the Sardinian Kingdoms or Judgedoms. Each kingdom was ruled by a leader known as a judge. These judges held great power, similar to kings. However, they were not absolute rulers who could do whatever they wanted. The kingdoms were Cagliari, Arborea, Gallura, and Torres.

These kingdoms began because the island had to look after itself. For a long time, the Byzantine Empire ruled Sardinia. But after the year 705, pirates from North Africa began to raid the coasts. The Byzantine army could not provide enough help to stop them. Because the island was far from the main Byzantine lands, it became disconnected. The people had to become economically and militarily independent to survive. This need for defense helped the four separate kingdoms grow and take power.

Governance in the Judgedoms was quite different from the rest of Europe. Instead of a system called feudalism, they used institutions closer to the Byzantine style. The judge was the main leader, but he shared power with a group called the Corona de Logu.

This was a central council made of elders and high priests. They actually appointed the ruler and gave him his supreme power. The judge ruled based on a special agreement with his people. If a judge was a tyrant or very unfair, the people could even remove him from power.

To keep things organized, the kingdoms were divided into smaller districts called curadorias. Each district had its own local officials to manage public property. Laws were very important for keeping order and protecting the people. A famous set of rules called the Carta de Logu was used in Arborea.

A leader named Mariano IV helped start these rules. Later, his daughter Eleanor of Arborea expanded them to fit a changing society. These laws protected farms, horses, and leather production to help the island stay strong.

Religion and culture also shaped life in the medieval kingdoms. Christianity spread across the island, and many beautiful churches were built. Monks from different places arrived to teach new ways of farming. This led to a style of building called Romanesque architecture. While Greek was used in the past, the Sardinian language became the official way to write laws.

These kingdoms eventually faced pressure from cities like Pisa and Genoa. This changed the way Sardinia was ruled as the Middle Ages came to an end.

{ "text": "The Sardinian kingdoms, also known as the Judgedoms or Judicatures, were independent states on the island of Sardinia. These states existed during the Middle Ages, specifically between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. Each kingdom was a sovereign state, meaning it had the power to govern itself. The rulers of these states were called judges, or \"giudici\" in the local language. Although they held powers similar to kings, their authority functioned through a unique political system.

\n\nThe rise of these kingdoms was driven by the need for survival. For centuries, Sardinia was a province of the Byzantine Empire. However, after the year 705, Saracen pirates from North Africa began raiding the island. The Byzantine army could not provide effective opposition to these attacks. Because the fall of the Exarchate of Africa disconnected Sardinia from the Byzantine core, the island became isolated. To survive, the Sardinians had to become economically and militarily independent. By the time Pope Gregory VII sent a letter in 1073, the existence of four distinct rulers was already recognized.
