The Crown of Aragon was a group of lands joined by one king.

It began in 1137. This happened when the Kingdom of Aragon and the County of Barcelona joined through marriage. Their son, Alfonso II, became the ruler of both lands in 1162.

This group was not one single country. Each part had its own laws and its own parliament. The king ruled over them all, but the lands stayed separate.

At its height, the Crown was a sea power. It controlled many places in the Mediterranean Sea. These places included the Balearic Islands, Sicily, and Sardinia. It even held parts of Greece for a time. Soldiers called Almogavars helped build this empire. They worked in many parts of southern Europe.

In 1479, the Crown joined with the Crown of Castile. This was through the marriage of two rulers. Later, the Crown of Aragon ended after a war. King Philip V abolished it between 1707 and 1716.
