The Meuse is a major river in Europe.

It begins in France on the Langres plateau. From there, the water flows north through Belgium. It then enters the Netherlands. Finally, it reaches the North Sea. The river is part of a huge area called the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta.

This delta is a place where many rivers meet the sea. You can see how the river winds through the land in satellite photos.

The river moves through many different landscapes. It flows past the town of Sedan and the city of Charleville-Mézières. In Belgium, the Sambre river joins the Meuse at Namur.

Later, the river winds east past Liège.

Near Heusden, the river splits into two paths. One path is called the Afgedamde Maas. The other path is called the Bergse Maas. This path eventually becomes the Amer river.

History has changed how the river looks. In the late Middle Ages, a big flood changed the river's path. This flood connected the Meuse to the Merwede river at Woudrichem. Later, people built a new path called the Bergse Maas. This was a huge job in Dutch engineering. It helped stop the Rhine and Meuse rivers from flooding together. In 1904, a dam was finished at the southern inlet. This turned one part of the river into the Afgedamde Maas. This part no longer receives water from the main river.

The Meuse is very important for moving things. Many large boats use the river to travel. This connects big ports like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Antwerp.

Some parts of the river are too shallow for big boats. In those places, people use the Juliana Canal instead. There are also many ways to cross the water. You can find many road bridges and railway bridges. There are even about 32 different ferry crossings for people to use.

Many interesting things are linked to this river. Long ago, people found fossils of a sea reptile near Maastricht. Scientists named this creature Mosasaurus after the river.

The river has also been part of many famous battles. In 2021, the river area saw very bad flooding. Because of this, five countries work together to manage the water. France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium all signed an agreement in 2002. They work as a team to look after the river basin.
