Auvergne is a cultural region found in central France.

It is now mostly part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes area. This land is famous for its mountains and dormant volcanoes. One group of volcanoes is called the Chaîne des Puys. These volcanoes began to form about 70,000 years ago. Most of them have worn down over time. They now look like rounded hills called puys. The Puy de Dôme is the highest volcano in the region. However, the Sancy Massif is the highest point in all of Auvergne.

The land changes depending on where you stand. The northern part of the region is covered in hills. The southern part is much more mountainous with many green pastures.

A huge oak forest called Tronçais covers nearly 20,000 hectares. This is the largest oak forest in all of Europe. Two major rivers flow through this landscape. The Loire river runs through the southeast and borders the northeast. The Allier river runs from north to south down the center. You can also find about 50 freshwater ponds and lakes here.

Long ago, the region was home to the Arverni tribe. They were one of the most powerful Gallic tribes.

Their king was a man named Vercingetorix. He ruled in 52 BC and made many alliances. The Arverni lived in a mountainous area that helped protect them. They were very wealthy and had many gold and silver mines. These mines were used at least since 400 BC. The people were also great at making metal and ceramic goods. They even made their own money to use for trade.

In later years, many different leaders ruled the land. During the Middle Ages, the area was split into different parts. Some parts belonged to counts, while others were held by dukes. In the 16th century, the region went through religious wars. Later, Queen Catherine de' Medici helped bring the last parts of the area under royal control. In the 18th century, life improved for many farmers. They began to grow more food and make more cheese. During World War II, the city of Vichy served as a headquarters for the French State.

Today, Auvergne is a place where farming and industry meet.

Many people raise beef and dairy cattle in the pastures. This milk is used to make famous cheeses like Cantal and Saint-Nectaire. The region is also known for making tires. The big company Michelin is based in Clermont-Ferrand. There are also many researchers studying things like chemistry and weather. Visitors can also enjoy the Le Pal theme park. It is one of the most visited amusement parks in France.
