The mountains were formed in a very interesting way. Much of the rock is metamorphic and is 2 billion years old. Some areas have much newer rock from volcanic activity. Some peaks, like Ilamen, look very dramatic. These shapes happened because erosion wore away old volcano domes. This left behind the hard material that once plugged the volcanic cones.

History can be found all over this landscape. People lived here in prehistoric times. You can still see rock paintings that date back to 6000 BC. The mountains are the land of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg. Near the city of Tamanrasset, there is an oasis called Abalessa. This is where the tomb of Tin Hinan is located. She is believed to be the matriarch of the Tuareg.

Life in the Hoggar Mountains can be tough but beautiful. The summers are hot and the winters are cold. Temperatures can even fall below freezing at night. Rain is very rare and does not happen often.

Because it is less extreme than the rest of the Sahara, many living things stay here. You can find trees like myrtle and tamarisk scattered around. Many different birds also live in this important area.

There are many special animals to discover in the park. You might see barbary sheep or the Dorcas gazelle. Scientists even found signs of the Northwest African cheetah here. In 2020, a single cheetah was filmed in the Atakor volcanic field.

Another famous spot is the Assekrem plateau. A man named Charles de Foucauld built a hermitage there in 1911. A few Catholic monks still live there today. It is a very special place to visit.
