It sits in south-eastern Algeria. This land is near the borders of Libya and Niger. The name Tassili n'Ajjer means "plateau of rivers" in the Berber language. It covers a massive area of 72,000 square kilometers. The site is a national park and a Biosphere Reserve. It was even added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1982. This place is famous for having some of the most important prehistoric cave art in the world.

The landscape looks very strange and beautiful. Most of the area is made of sandstone rock. This rock has a thin layer called desert varnish on it. This layer changes the color of the rocks to near-black or dull red. Over a long time, wind and water have worn the stone away. This has created nearly 300 natural rock arches in the southeast. In the north, you can find deep gorges and pools of water. The many rock formations look like a forest made of stone.

Many people say the view looks like the surface of the moon.

This land has a very long and busy history. Millions of years ago, the area was actually under the sea. Later, it became a flat land where rivers flowed. During the Silurian and Devonian periods, layers of sediment built up. These layers are where people now find natural gas and petroleum. Much later, the ground began to lift and tilt. This caused rivers to dig deep into the sandstone. In the Pliocene period, volcanoes even added craters and lava flows to the region.

Many living things call this plateau home. Because the area is high up, it can hold onto water. This makes the plants more green than the rest of the desert. You can find the Saharan cypress and Saharan myrtle here. The cypress is one of the longest-living plants on Earth.

Many birds live here too, like the Pharaoh eagle-owl. In the past, even West African crocodiles lived in these waters.

Ancient people used this land for thousands of years. Between 5500 and 1500 BCE, groups lived in the high mountains. They were pastoralists, which means they moved with their animals. They left behind amazing rock art that shows their lives.

You can also find old clay pots, beads, and jewelry. These items help us learn how people lived as the climate changed. They moved from hunting to herding cattle, horses, and eventually camels.
