It sits in the Sahara desert in Algeria. The name means "plateau of rivers." This area is near the borders of Libya and Niger. It covers a very large space of 72,000 square kilometers.

The land is made of sandstone rock. This rock is stained by dark colors. It can look near-black or dull red. The rocks have been worn down by wind and water. This makes rock forests and large arches. The view looks like the moon.
