This land is very high up in the air. It sits between the Tanggula and Kunlun mountain chains. It covers 83,000 square kilometres of land. In 2017, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. People call it the largest and highest plateau in the world.

The land has many interesting ways it works. In the southeast, the Chumar River flows through the area. This river is a main source for the Yangtze River. Most of the rest of the land is endorheic. This means the water does not flow to the sea. Instead, the water stays in many isolated lakes. Because of this, some people call it the Hoh Xil lake district. The ground itself was shaped by volcanoes long ago. Some of these volcanoes look like the ones in Hawaii.

Humans have worked to protect this land for a long time. In 1995, a large part of the area became a nature reserve. This reserve covers 45,000 square kilometres. It sits at an average height of 4,600 metres. The site includes parts of Zhidoi County and Qumarlêb County. A famous film called Kekexili: Mountain Patrol came out in 2004. This movie helped people in China learn about the area. It also helped people learn about the Tibetan antelope.

Many different animals live in this harsh climate. There are more than 230 species of wild animals here. Some animals are under special state protection in China. You can find wild yaks and wild donkeys here. There are also white-lip deer and brown bears. The brown bears eat plateau pikas and yaks. The Tibetan antelope, or chiru, is also an endangered animal. Many of these antelopes gather at Zhuonai Lake.

It is not hard to travel near the edge of this place. The Qingzang Railway runs along the eastern boundary. There is also a big road called China National Highway 109. Builders even made the Fenghuoshan Tunnel in this area. It is the highest railway tunnel in the whole world. The tunnel is 1,338 metres long. Its entrances are 4,905 metres above sea level. This shows how high and grand the Hoh Xil region really is.
