They connect the Tibetan Plateau to the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. These mountains run mostly from north to south. They act like a giant wall between the Sichuan Basin and the lowlands of Myanmar. The mountains sit in several places. They cover parts of Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet, and Qinghai. Some parts even reach into Kachin State in Myanmar.

This area is a very important part of the natural world.

Deep river valleys cut through these mountain ranges. These valleys carry some of the biggest rivers in Southeast Asia. The Yangtze, the Mekong, and the Salween rivers all flow through here. Because these three rivers run so close together, the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The mountains were made by a massive event. Long ago, the Indian subcontinent crashed into the Eurasian Plate. This collision pushed the land up very high. The rivers then carved deep paths through the rising mountains.

The mountains are made of many different ranges. The westernmost part includes the Nu Mountains and the Taniantaweng Mountains.

Moving east, you find the Mangkam, Ninchin, and Yun ranges. The Yulong Mountains are also part of this system. The third section is known as the Shaluli Mountains. These mountains sit between the Yangtze and Yalong Rivers. The easternmost core is the Daxue Mountains. This range is home to Mount Gongga. It is the highest peak in the whole Hengduan group.

There are many different types of homes for living things here. The mountains have habitats ranging from subtropical to temperate. Much of the land is covered in subalpine conifer forests. These are woods filled with trees that grow cones.

Some high areas have shrubs and meadows. The lower river valleys in the south have a tropical savanna environment. These different areas allow many different species to live in one place. This makes the mountains a very special place for nature.

Many rare animals call these mountains home. The eastern ranges are where you might find the giant panda.

Other animals like deer and primates live in the forests too. You can also find rare plants like the Chinese yew. The mountains stay very green because they did not have ice covering them during the ice ages. This helped many living things stay safe and thrive. The Hengduan Mountains are a vital link for plants and animals in Asia.
