It sits in Mainland Southeast Asia. The mountains stretch through Laos and Vietnam. They also touch a small part of northeast Cambodia. This range acts like a giant wall in the land. It runs in a gentle curve along the coast. This curve divides the Mekong River basin from the narrow coastal plain. The plain sits right by the South China Sea.

The mountains have many different shapes and sides. The eastern slope rises very steeply from the plains. Many short rivers flow down this side. The western slope is much more gentle. This side forms large, flat areas called plateaus. There are three main plateaus in the range. They are the Phouane Plateau, the Nakai Plateau, and the Bolaven Plateau. Most of the mountain crests sit on the Laotian side. Important paths through the mountains are the Nape Pass and the Mụ Giạ Pass.

People have many names for these mountains. Some call them the Annamese Range or the Annamite Mountains. The name "Annam" comes from a Vietnamese word. It means "the tranquil south." This word refers to Vietnam. Long ago, the French used these names to talk about the Vietnamese people. This history shows how different cultures saw this land. The name has stayed with the mountains for a long time.

There are many high points to find here. The highest peak is Phou Bia. It reaches a height of 1,885 meters. Other tall peaks include Phu Xai Lai Leng. The peak called Ngọc Linh is also very high. It sits at the edge of the Kontum Massif in central Vietnam. The mountains are also home to many rare living things. You might find the Annamite rabbit or the saola. The saola looks like an antelope. Other animals include the Douc langur and the large gaur.

The people in these highlands have a long history. At the start of the 20th century, many ethnic minorities lived here. They were not Vietnamese. This changed between 1976 and the 1990s. About 6 million settlers moved to the area during those years. Because of this, the ethnic Vietnamese Kinh now outnumber the native groups. This changed how the highlands look and feel today. It is a place where many different stories meet.
