These mountains sit in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. They run in a gentle curve. This curve splits the land into two parts. One side has the Mekong River basin. The other side has a narrow coastal plain. This plain sits by the South China Sea.

The mountains have many different shapes. Some parts are steep. Other parts are flat plateaus. There are three main plateaus. They are the Phouane, Nakai, and Bolaven plateaus. The highest peak is Phou Bia. It is 1,885 meters tall. The mountains have thick, wet forests. These forests are home to rare animals. You might find the Annamite rabbit there. You might also see the saola. The saola looks like an antelope. Other animals include the Douc langur and the large gaur. Many different groups of people live in these highlands. In the past, many ethnic groups lived there. Later, many new settlers moved to the area too.
