The hills have steep valleys and river gorges. Many rivers flow through the area. These rivers flow to places like the Salween River.

The ground here is made of hard rock and limestone. Because of this, the area is great for mining. People find silver and lead in the hills. It is also a famous place for gems. You can find rubies and sapphires there.

Some parts of the hills are high plains. Not many people live on these plains. In some areas, farmers grow many potatoes.

The land can change too. In 2011, a large earthquake hit the Daen Lao range. This earthquake damaged many houses and buildings. Even so, the Shan Hills remain a very important part of the region.
