Most of the river runs through steep mountain canyons. In China, people call it the Nu River. In Myanmar, it is called the Thanlwin. The river is very diverse. It holds about 25 percent of the world's land animals. It also has thousands of different plants.

Many people live near the river. They use the water for farming and fishing.

The river is also a place for power. People can use the moving water to make electricity. Some big dams are planned for the river. However, China decided to make a national park instead of a dam in 2016. The river finally ends at a wide delta in the Andaman Sea.
