It begins high up on the cold Tibetan Plateau. From there, it flows south through southwest China and eastern Myanmar.

Most of the river's journey is through steep and rugged mountain canyons. In China, the river is called the Nu Jiang or Nu River. In Myanmar, people call it the Thanlwin.

The river's water moves very fast through these deep gaps in the earth. In Yunnan, China, the canyons can be as deep as 2,000 meters. Some people even call this area the Grand Canyon of the East. The river flows through many different types of weather and land. It moves from cold mountains down to hot, tropical plains.

People have lived near this river for a very long time. About 5,000 years ago, groups of people began moving south along its path. They built small kingdoms and city-states along the way. The river has also been a border between many strong lands. For a long time, it sat between the Burmese empires and Imperial China. In the 1800s, the British Empire also used this area. The city of Mawlamyine served as a colonial capital for many years.

The river is also used to create power for people. The water falls a great distance from its source. This makes it very good for making electricity through hydropower.

There are only a few small dams on the main river today. Since the 1970s, governments have talked about building much larger dams. China even planned to dam the upper river in the past. However, they chose to make a national park in 2016 instead. The future of big dam projects in Myanmar and Thailand is still not certain.
