It starts in the mountains of Yunnan, China. From there, it flows southeast into Vietnam. The river has a reddish-brown color. This happens because the water carries a lot of silt. Silt is fine dirt that stays in the water.

In China, many parts of the river have different names. It is often called the Yuan River. When it reaches Vietnam, it flows past the capital city, Hanoi.

The river then flows into the Gulf of Tonkin. Near the end, it forms a large area called a delta. This delta is a flat area of land. Many farmers use this land to grow rice. The river can also have very strong floods. These floods can be quite violent. To keep people safe, there is a big network of dikes. Dikes are walls built to stop water from flooding.
