Many rivers join together here. These include the Xi, Bei, and Dong rivers. All these waters flow into the South China Sea. This system is very large. It is China's third-longest river. It is also the second largest by volume. This means it carries a lot of water.

The river drains many areas. It flows through Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. It also touches parts of Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Jiangxi. It even reaches parts of Vietnam.

The river gets its name from shells. These shells look like pearls. They live in the riverbed near Guangzhou. This is a famous city on the river.

The river mouth forms a big bay. This bay separates Macau and Zhuhai from Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Ships use the river to travel. People must dredge the estuary to keep it open for them.
