It flows through the provinces of Guangxi and Hunan. It is the largest river in Hunan. The river flows into Lake Dongting. From there, it flows into the Yangtze River.

The river has two main branches at the top. One is the West Branch. It starts in the Haiyang Mountains in Guangxi. The other is the Xiao River. It starts in Lanshan County in Hunan. For a long time, people thought the West Branch was the main part. But a study in 2011 found the Xiao River is the main stream. This is because it is longer and has more water.

These two branches meet at Ping Island. After they meet, they form the main stem of the Xiang.

The river flows northeast through many cities. These cities include Hengyang, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, and Changsha. The river is also part of old stories. People tell tales of two goddesses who lived there. They say the spots on some bamboo are from their tears.
