Many rivers flow into this lake. These include the Xiang, Zi, Yuan, and Li rivers. The lake is part of the Yangtze River system. It acts like a big basin for the river. This means the lake changes with the seasons. In the rainy season, much water flows in. The lake grows very large. In the dry season, the water level drops. The lake can shrink to just a few hundred square kilometers.
