Three rivers flow into the lake. These are the Gan, Xin, and Xiu rivers. The lake flows into the Yangtze River.

The lake is a home for many animals. About 500,000 birds visit the lake. Many Siberian cranes spend the winter there. These birds are critically endangered, which means they are at risk of dying out. A small animal called a finless porpoise lives there too. People call it the "river pig."

There are some problems for the animals. Large ships move through the lake often. This makes it hard for the porpoises to hear food. Also, digging for sand makes the water muddy. This makes it hard for them to see.

The lake size changes with the seasons. Sometimes the lake gets much smaller. In 2012, the lake almost dried up. This happened because of a drought. It also happened because of the Three Gorges Dam. This dam stores water for use in winter. Scientists want to protect the lake and its wildlife.
