It sits within the Jiujiang Prefecture in Jiangxi Province. Three rivers feed the lake: the Gan, Xin, and Xiu rivers. These waters flow into the lake before moving north. They enter the Yangtze River through a single channel. The lake size changes a lot during different seasons. It can grow very large or shrink quite a bit. In recent years, the total size has been decreasing.

Many animals rely on this water to survive. About 500,000 migratory birds use the lake as a home. Many Siberian cranes fly here to spend the winter. In fact, up to 90% of these rare birds stay here. The lake also holds the finless porpoise. People call this animal the "river pig." There are about 500 of these porpoises in Poyang and Dongting Lakes. However, their numbers are dropping by 7.3 percent every year.

History shows how the lake was formed. Long ago, the Yangtze River followed a different path. Around AD 400, the river changed its course to the south. This change caused the Gan River to back up. This backup helped form Lake Poyang. The lake was once named Pengli Lake. It was also named for Poyang County. The lake once flooded Haihun County as well. This event led to a large group of people moving to Wucheng.

Some events in the lake are very famous. In 1363, the Battle of Lake Poyang took place. Some say it was the largest naval battle ever. During the Tang dynasty, the lake was very large. Its area reached 20,000 square kilometers back then. In early 2012, the lake faced a hard time. Drought and sand digging made it very small. The area dropped to only 2,665 square kilometers that year.

Today, people work to keep the lake healthy. Large ships move through the lake very often. Two ships enter or leave every single minute. This noise makes it hard for porpoises to hear food. Also, digging for sand makes the water very muddy. This makes it hard for them to see. In 2020, China started a 10-year fishing ban. This ban protects 332 sites to help wildlife. Groups like Conservation International are also working to protect the area.
