Pantanal

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Pantanal is a truly massive natural region. It is the world's largest tropical wetland area. It is also the largest area of flooded grasslands on Earth. Most of this land is in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. It also spreads into Mato Grosso, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The area covers between 140,000 and 240,000 square kilometers. This place is very important for many different living things.

The way the Pantanal works depends on the seasons. It is a tropical region with a wet and dry cycle. During the rainy season, about 80% of the land is underwater. This happens because the land is a gently sloped basin. Water runs off from the nearby Planalto highlands into the basin. The water moves very slowly through the thick plants. It eventually leaves through the Paraguay River and its many branches. This seasonal flooding creates a special home for many plants and animals.

Scientists and explorers have studied this unique land for a long time. The name "Pantanal" comes from Portuguese and Spanish words. These words mean things like "swamp," "wetland," or "marsh." The suffix "-al" means there is an abundance or a large collection of them. In 1981, the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park was established in Brazil. This park is located in the municipality of Poconé. Later, in 1993, it was named a Ramsar Site of International Importance.

The Pantanal is full of incredible numbers and species. There are about 463 species of birds living there. You can find 269 species of fish and 236 species of mammals. There are also 141 species of reptiles and amphibians. The area has 10 million yacare caimans. This is the highest concentration of crocodilians in the world. You might even see a jaguar, which has a very healthy population here. Some rare animals include the giant river otter and the marsh deer.

Many things in the Pantanal connect to what you might see in nature. For example, the apple snail acts like a tiny gardener. When plants die in the flood, they rot and use up oxygen. The snail uses a long snorkel to breathe air from the surface. This lets the snail eat the dead plants and turn them into fertilizer. This process helps new plants grow. The Pantanal also acts like a natural water treatment system. It helps remove chemicals and pollutants from the water naturally.
